Chuhai Labs is an independent game studio and publisher based in the birthplace of Nintendo – Kyoto, Japan! We founded Chuhai Labs in 2020 as a brand of VITEI Backroom. Started by industry and Nintendo veteran Giles Goddard, our studio innovates through unique game design, embracing technical advances, and ultimately via relentlessly pursuing fun.

Chuhai Labs is looking for a Freelance Level Designer to join our team to help us push forward an exciting new project.

Chuhai Labs is an indie developer/publisher founded in 2020 by Nintendo alumnus Giles Goddard who developed classic titles including Star Fox, 1080 Snowboarding, Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Chuhai Labs is located in the beautiful city of Kyoto, Japan.

What We Need You To Do:

  • Take full ownership of designing, building, and implementing levels from prototype to full in-game that meet the title’s aims while utilizing and expanding upon gameplay systems to surprise and satisfy our players
  • Collaborate closely with the Game Director, Level Designer team, and all other disciplines throughout all production stages
  • Initiate and facilitate regular reviews and testing by others of all significant contributions and act on feedback accordingly
  • Timely and quality execution of all assigned tasks and features, including but not limited to the design of game levels and their documentation as needed
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and time-management skills and use them to foster and maintain a pleasant working environment for all team members

Required Experience & Knowledge:

  • 2+ years’ experience in commercial game development
  • Have shipped at least one commercial game, preferably in a 3D action genre
  • Proficiency and comfort working within the Unity game engine
  • Self-motivated, well-organized, and proactive about acquiring knowledge and learning new skills
  • Experience working with version control software (such as Perforce, Git etc.)

Preferred Attributes:

  • 4+ years of commercial game development experience
  • Multiple shipped commercial games on a variety of platforms, especially home consoles
  • Fan of 90s – 2000s era console gaming
  • Currently resides in Japan
